MR. DEVON PHILLIPS

Mr. Devon Phillips has worked in education for over 16 years.  He has various educational and coaching experience at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. He began his educational career by teaching social studies and coaching girl's varsity tennis at Evansville North High School, in Evansville Indiana.  The bulk of his teaching career, however, was spent at Franklin Central High School in the Franklin Township Community School Corporation on the southeast side of Indianapolis, Indiana.  At Franklin Central High School, Mr. Phillips emerged as a leader in the Social Studies Department and in the Freshman Academy.  Mr. Phillips lead multiple initiatives while teaching at Franklin Central High School including the 1:1 Initiative, The Thirst Project, FC Freshman Mentor Program, and Powerful Learning Practices (PLP), to name a few.  Mr. Phillips also coached junior varsity baseball, girls freshman basketball, and middle school football for Franklin Township Community School Corporation.

 

Mr. Phillips started his administrative career in 2013 as the lone assistant principal at Lillie Idella Kitley Elementary, which at the time was the largest elementary school in the state of Indiana.  Kitley Elementary experienced great success and growth in the four years that Mr. Phillips was a part of the administrative team.  During his time at Kitley, Mr. Phillips became an Advanced School Safety Specialist and was a 2015 Life Changer of the Year National Nominee.  Mr. Phillips was hired as the Batesville Intermediate School principal in Batesville, Indiana in 2017.  After one year at that post, Mr. Phillips and his family moved to San Diego, California.

 

Mr. Phillips started his California administrative experience in 2018 as one of three assistant principals at Abraham Lincoln High School on the southeast side of San Diego.  The following year, Mr. Phillips became a co-principal of the San Diego Cooperative Charter School until the Mountain View campus shut down.  In 2020, Mr. Phillips was hired as the Principal of Primary Education at Urban Discovery Schools.  He remained in that position until accepting the Executive Director and Principal position at Old Town Academy in 2022.

 

Mr. Phillips grew up in a small rural city of Dunkirk, Indiana.  He found his love for education through his parents, Christine and "Chip," who are both retired educators.  Mr. Phillips went to Jay County High School (JCHS) in Portland, Indiana where he excelled academically, athletically, and musically.  He graduated from JCHS with Academic Honors in 2002.  Mr. Phillips attended college at the University of Indianapolis (2006) where he played baseball and received degrees in History and Political Science.  Mr. Phillips earned his Masters of Education from Indiana University (2012) and his Educational Leadership Endorsement from Western Governors University (2013).  

 

Mr. Phillips resides in San Diego, CA but remains a Hoosier at heart.  In his spare time, Mr. Phillips is an avid sports fan, movie buff and video game enthusiast.  His love for the Indianapolis Colts should be noted.  Mr. Phillips is a single father that enjoys spending time with his only daughter, Cambri.  They enjoy playing video games, soccer and watching movies together!
