SAN DIEGO (Sept. 18, 2026) – Devon Phillips, the executive director and principal of
Old Town Academy (OTA), announced a campaign to remind parents who couldn’t sign
up their children in kindergarten at public schools because they didn’t turn five years old
by Sept.1 that options for enrollment still exist.
Charter schools like OTA can accept children from all over San Diego County as soon
as they turn 5, whenever that occurs.
“We can enroll students at any time, so they can keep up with their peer group and not
miss a beat,” said Phillips. “We have all-day kindergarten seats available and are proud
to offer this service to parents who are seeking educational opportunities for their kids.”
Named among the top 10 percent of public schools in California, OTA is a K-8 charter
school serving up to 270 students, with a maximum of 30 students per class. Its
students perform above average by double digits in English Language Arts and math.
Old Town Academy is the Number-one-ranked Purple Star school in the state, with 30
military families sending their children to campus. The school employs rigorous Core
Knowledge academics, hands-on project-based learning, and character-building
education. Robotics and music round out the coursework in a close-knit environment
where students receive personalized support.
