“Military-connected students are: children in TK-12 schools, and young adults in Trade Schools, or Institutions of Higher Education (2 or 4 year schools) that are official dependents of a Military Service member. A military-connected student has one degree of separation from their military sponsor; the connection may be biological, because of an adoption, through foster parenting, or within loco parentis authorization.”
- Adapted from Military Child Education Coalition
San Diego County leads the state in military-friendly schools, representing about half of all the schools designated. The California Purple Star School Designation Program (Purple Star Program) seeks to reduce the burden on military-connected students and their families by articulating the most critical transition supports available. The Purple Star Program is a way to publicly recognize and designate schools that are committed and best equipped to meet the unique needs of these students and their families.
